The Earth Meets the Sky: Landscape Elements of Rocks and Grasses
Windy Point
"Windy Point"
I painted "Windy Point" during this covid physical distancing summer.
With plenty of time to spend in my home studio, I came across a photo
of this rock formation at Windy Point on Mt. Lemmon, in the Catalinas
here outside of Tucson. The smaller rock is balanced so precariously as
if it had slid a fair distance and the ride was ended by coming to rest
on another large rock sphere. The sky was bright, and in the distance,
barely visible, were other land and rock formations. When seen at a
distance of several feet, this painting, for me, takes on an abstract
quality as I painted shapes and textures instead of rocks and boulders.
It was a great challenge and perfect for this hot intense summer.

"The Earth Meets the Sky: Landscape Elements of Rocks and Grasses" is
the title and subject of the my online class, the second in a series of
six hosted by the Southern Arizona Watercolor Guild(SAWG).
I had planned to teach a workshop on this subject this past March, when
the Guild temporarily closed their gallery three days before my
scheduled class due to the coronavirus pandemic. My class was postponed
indefinitely.
When I received the phone call from SAWG, asking if I would consider
teaching a class in their first instructional series online, I saw an
opportunity to teach part of the class I had already planned.
This class will focus on answering the question I was often asked after
I had taught my wet-on-wet Sky classes, "What do I do with the
foreground?".
I'll discuss the decisions that need to be made before putting brush
and paint to paper. There will be at least three demos, one of two
different ways to paint grasses, and an explanation of the
characteristics of rocks. You will be encouraged to think of rocks as
shapes, textures, and colors. I will do a demo on round rocks, and then
on angular rocks, demonstrating wet-on-wet techniques, wet-on-dry
painting, and one of my favorite techniques, scraping.
These small short demos will include some scrofitto, negative painting,
and blending. You are welcome to paint along with me while I do a demo
but you may choose to watch and listen. There will be time immediately
after my demo for you to paint.
This will be a fast-moving class and geared to those who have some
experience with paint, paper and brushes, and have an interest in
landscape painting.
It will be a challenge for me as I won't be able to see the work you
are doing. There will be Q&A periods, a break, and hopefully plenty of
information and fun doing the rocks and grasses painting.
You can register for my class "Earth Meets the Sky: Landscape Elements
of Rocks and Grasses", and any of the other four remaining classes on
the SAWG website, www.southernazwatercolorguild.com . Click on the
Workshops tab and scroll down to Gallery Online Classes. You will find
class descriptions and information about the instructors. Then click on
Gallery Classes Registration tab to register. These classes are open to
SAWG members and any interested non-members. The registration fee is
$35.
Please join me for this 2-2.5 hour class, on Tuesday morning September
22, 2020 from 9-11:30AM.
Be safe. Be Kind. Be healthy through this challenging Covid period, and
always keep painting and enjoying the art of watercolors.
